Transpersonal Regression Therapy

This is a very dynamic form of therapy, useful for many problems with a psychological component, and also for some that seem to be purely physical. Transpersonal refers to the part of the therapy in which the client may, for example, effortlessly relive things outside of their ‘normal’ ability to remember, and see things from outside themselves as though they were an impartial observer. It is also known as Past Reality Integration Therapy.

TRT is a therapy which looks into the subconscious mind to find the originating cause of the problem. This is why it can be called ‘regression’ - the client ‘regresses’ (goes back) to the time of the cause. Then different techniques are used during the session to help the client to rid himself of the result of past trauma. These include energy exchange and ‘reframing’, both of which use the client’s imagination to change how they view the past. The therapy does not use hypnosis, there is no period of relaxation, but it does, over the session, allow the client’s mind to go into an altered state of consciousness so that past memories can surface. Although memories that the client consciously remembers can come into clearer light, the most powerful results come from the memory of episodes that had been forgotten by the conscious mind, but which had left an indelible mark on the client’s unconscious mind.

Why open a can of worms?

People who are suspicious of treatments aimed at improving the mind by looking at memories sometimes mock, saying “Why open a can of worms?” As Hans TenDam, the originator of this branch of regression therapy says - “Because we are the can!” Our worms are not locked safely away in a can inside us - if they were we would have no problems at all. No, all those worms are wriggling away everywhere inside us, causing us our problems. Far better to open the can and let them leave, or die, or transform into something more beneficial.

One dramatic example of this is of a man who remembered, during a session, being in a road accident at about 8 years old, and hearing through his near-coma the ambulance personnel shouting ‘Quick, Quick’. The child had taken this instruction on board so well that he developed severe premature ejaculation when he reached adulthood. Astonishing, but once he found out that those words had not even been spoken to him, his problem was gone.

This is only one example of the type of situation that can cause hugely deleterious effects. No amount of other ‘talk therapy’ would ever have found the reason for that problem. Hours could have been wasted by the client discussing his relationship with his father, or mother, and so on, all to no avail.

What can Transpersonal Regression Therapy help with?

Many types of problem can result from past episodes:

  • Phobias and fears
  • Moderate to severe anxiety
  • Lack of confidence
  • Feeling that life has been a struggle or somehow didn’t go right
  • Relationship problems, social phobias
  • Difficulties with weight - either too much or too little
  • Body dysmorphobia. (a feeling that a part of the body is deformed or wrong)
  • Fertility problems, especially where there is no obvious cause
  • Physical conditions that either have no physical explanation, or despite an explanation and treatment are not getting better

These are only some of the conditions that may have their root in a forgotten past event. Many quite ‘minor’ problems can also be addressed by this technique -for example a client felt breathless whenever she was asked to focus on her breathing, such as in a yoga class. This was alleviated by finding the relevant past memory.

What Happens in a Regression?

When a client is regressed to find the cause of her problem, in about 50% of cases the cause will be found in childhood, babyhood, or during her time inside her mother’s womb.

In the other 50% the cause will be found in a ‘past life’. I am using the inverted commas around ‘past life’ to make it clear that it does not matter whether the client believes in or accepts the possibility of the existence of past lives. She will get the same benefit from the session, even if she feels the story her mind produced for her was ‘only’ a metaphor, or that she tapped into a collective unconscious. The point is that the story she sees is relevant to her, which is why she sees it. And dealing with it as though it was true can produce astonishing improvements.

An example of this is a woman who has had unexplained chest problems with breathlessness for years, which has no formal diagnosis and does not respond to any form of therapy. During her regression session she sees herself being tortured to death by being put under a heavy weight, so that eventually the air is squeezed from her. Various techniques were then used by the therapist to help her let go of the result of this horrible death, and her breathing during and after the session became clear and free for the first time in years.

Experiencing, during the therapy session, unpleasant things that may have happened to us in the past can be temporarily distressing, but if the result is freedom from future pain, mental or physical, it is worth it!

Many clients find that not only do specific problems improve with TRT, but their whole sense of well-being, their overall energy, can greatly improve. Also their outlook on the world and their life can turn a corner, leaving them feeling renewed.

Transpersonal Regression Therapy differs from other types of psychotherapy or ‘talk therapies’ in that it usually gives results more quickly. Some problems will be adequately sorted out by one session, with most needing two or three. This contrasts with psychotherapy or counselling, where clients typically attend weekly or fortnightly for years, if not decades.

A TRT session can take anything from one and a half to four hours. Because it is impossible to know in advance how long any session will take, I book to allow 3 or 4 hours, but will only charge for the time used (to the next quarter hour, at present €80 per hour) with a minimum charge of €100 to cover the first 90 minutes. I do not, nor could I, deliberately lengthen any session. I am very happy if the work has all been done in a shorter time. But unfortunately the client must be to be prepared to pay for a longer session if that is what turns out to be necessary.

I use the word ‘work’ deliberately. A TRT session is not one where the client lies or sits back and lets the therapist do everything. It is a real co-operation, and the client will feel he has been busy. So I do not encourage late appointments, which only produce sleepy clients; nor ones when the client is in a rush somewhere after the session, or worrying about her children being picked up from Brownies or football! The client must be fully present to what is going on, and be prepared to concentrate on what is occurring. We can agree on a maximum time (or charge) before we start the work.

A TRT session is, despite this, usually a very enjoyable experience. It is wonderful to have deep insights about what has been making oneself tick. Once the material has been digested the client will often feel much less like a pawn of fate.

Accident Trauma Release

A branch of TRT is called “Accident Trauma Release” and does what it says - it allows the body to release all the physical and emotional traumas left by any sort of accident, from tripping, falling downstairs or off a bicycle, to major car and other accidents. This can greatly alleviate the sense of ‘never being right since’ an accident, as the body’s energies are able to settle down into their pre-accident pattern. An accident trauma release will sometimes be necessary during a TRT session, but it can also be used on its own.

Who is suitable as a client?

  • Anyone able to take responsibility for their own health.
  • Anyone who can explore their own thoughts and feelings, and knows the difference between reality and fantasy.
  • Anybody with the real desire to change, who is able to work along with the quite complex changes that may occur during a session.

Who is not suitable as a client?

  • People suffering from psychotic illnesses
  • Some personality disorder types
  • People with most learning disabilities, or other conditions causing concentration or comprehension problems. This includes being under the influence of alcohol or other drugs.
  • Small children
  • Some people find it extremely difficult to visualise or imagine that they have an ‘inner self’, and may not find this type of therapy useful.

Past-life and Life between Life Regression

The existence of past lives has been discovered accidentally by many hypnotherapists, during routine sessions, when the patient’s subconscious mind is invited to ‘go to the time from which your problem stems’.

Past Life Regression

Many patients spontaneously find themselves in another life, often with resonances with their present problems. Today’s problem can then be let go because the subject realises it is only relevant to a time now well over. In about half the cases of problems caused by a reaction to a past event, that event will have been in a previous life, not the current one.

It is not necessary to believe in the literal truth of ‘past lives’ to gain benefit from a past-life session. The situations experienced during the session can be accepted as a metaphor, or as a fairy-tale that your subconscious mind has created to explain your problem to your conscious mind. It is possible in this way to learn a great deal about yourself.

People who are sceptical about past lives often mock the idea by saying ‘everyone is always royalty’. Nothing could be further from the truth, the vast majority of clients find themselves in very ordinary lives, as slaves, servants, peasants, or foot soldiers. It is rare to find someone in the life of a rich person, never mind royalty, for the simple reason that through history there have been proportionally very few rich people – just like today!

Appointments and Fees

Past-life sessions are only offered for those clients who may wish to progress to a “Life between Life” session (see below). The purpose of the session is to ascertain whether the client is able to access a past-life through the hypnotic method. If you wish to have regression therapy (or ‘past-life therapy’) for a specific problem or difficulty, please see the section on TRT (Transpersonal Regression Therapy).

A past-life session takes up to ninety minutes. Sessions are available on Thursday and Friday mornings or afternoons.

I do not do hypnosis appointments late, as being hypnotised is not a sleep, but can be like work for the client, and it is not useful if they are tired. If a client nods off, I have to wake her and start from scratch!

The fee for past-life is €100.

Please phone 01 2986365 for an appointment.

Life between Life Regression

If you do accept the idea that you have lived before, there next comes the question – where was I in between my lives?

Dr Michael Newton, a hypnotherapist in California, who passed away in 2016, stumbled upon the life - between - life when he was facilitating a past-life regression session for his client. She stated that she was lonely because none of her ‘group’ was here with her. On further questioning, she described her group of soul friends (no one has only one soul mate!) with whom she played and studied in the spirit world.

Dr Newton subsequently regressed up to 8,000 clients to their in-between, and found that all his clients described much the same experiences, suggesting that the ‘spirit world’ does exist, and is like they said.

Visiting one’s life in between lives can be fascinating, teaching a lot about why things have turned out as they have, with whom you have deep connections, what your abilities are, and how you occupy yourself, what work you do, while waiting to re-incarnate. Most comforting of all for many people, clients will meet their ‘spirit guide’, a higher soul, (not an angel,) who oversees your progress on this earth, and helps you through some of the difficulties. It has been suggested that the small ‘voice’ you may hear, often called intuition, may be this entity’s efforts to help you.

More about Life Between Lives

Dr Michael Newton has written books about his findings, called 'Journey of Souls' and'Destiny of Souls'. If you are interested in having an LBL session, but have not yet read these books, my advice is not to read them until after your session, as it is far easier to relax into and believe your own session if you are not comparing your performance or findings with what you have read.

Another book, 'Memories of the Afterlife' was overseen by Dr Newton, but written by therapists he has taught. I contributed a chapter.

You can also go onto the Newton Institute website at for fuller details.

What about the session?

An 'LBL' session takes up to 4 hours. During that time you will first go into a deep relaxation, and then go back to the womb just before your birth into this life. Then you go further back to a past life, and by going through the death, find yourself entering the spirit world. It can be slow at first to see the information, but with time and practice it comes clear.

Not everyone sees all the details of their between-life time. But most people feel they have seen what they needed, what will help them at this stage of their life.

Do I need to prepare?

It is best that you have had a past-life session first. (see past-life section) You should ideally be 30 years or older. Younger people do not receive as much information, probably because so much more of their life choices are still in front of them, and you must make these choices yourself.

Bring with you to the session a list of the questions you want answered. This is usually things like: ‘am I on the right path in life’, ‘why did my father die so young’, ‘will I meet my soulmate’, ‘what is life for’ and so on. Do not list too many, and realise that much of this information may come to you without needing to ask the specific question. Also many people find that once they are in the relaxation that some of the questions seem irrelevant.

Also, bring a list of about 10-12 people who you feel are still influencing you as you live your life today. These need not be still alive, or actively in your life. List them by name, relationship to you, and describe each with a few adjectives. So your list might start:

Sandra Bill
Sister Ex-Teacher
fun critical
loving pernickety
chatty encouraging

The purpose of this ‘theatre programme’ is to help me recognise individuals who turn up in spirit in your session, without you having to stop to explain to me who ‘Sandra’ is. Do not list everyone you know, and particularly not those who moved through your life but whose effect on you is no longer active.

If you would like your session recorded, it helps if you can bring two C90 or three C60 cassette tapes. I know this technology seems out of the Ark, but I find it the least invasive, easy to manage during the session, and it is immediately ready for you to take away. And think of it this way – you have been looking into the very distant past, so why not use a bit of the recent one!!

I advise that you do not listen to your recording for at least a month after your session, as what you remember, and remember feeling, is far more significant.
